Title: Hurdles cleared by remarkable women

Review: Anne Scriabin Klein and Vilma Barr here write how evolving achievements by 19 purposeful graduates of Penn, class of 1960, and including Klein herself, prophesied, both jointly and severally that they were indeed on the cusp of personal and remarkable success and fundamental change in our society and attitudes.

Surely each contributor gave direction to her own life. Yet equally so the American milieu changed as did their school and that was key as well to the enabling environment in which they could and did make their marks.

Each profiled person knew viscerally that she faced hurdles to be cleared and realities that were. Also she had something else shared. Each was determined and believing in herself.

While understandably taking quite differing paths, their in common efforts were to shine.

In their own words, the contributors have been portrayed by remarkable and yet not obvious insight resulting from Klein’s questions and hand. This is much more than a compilation of thoughts.

What perhaps I might have wanted, however, is more focus on the impact on the 19 by, for example activists like Gloria Steinem and significantly, surely Ruth Bader Ginsburg, before and during her tenure on the Supreme Court.

Yes, this is book well conceived and easy to read and think about. Another thought- Credit goes to what turned out to have been farsightedness, over fifty years ago by the University of Pennsylvania. Personal foundations were made possible and were encouraged. These women did the rest.

Title: Profiles Successful Women Who Overcame Gender Oppression

Review: This well-written book profiles courageous, fierce women who were among the first to pound their fists against the glass ceiling that prevented women from entering and advancing in the business world. Theiy overcame formidable obstacles and women everywhere owe them all our gratitude. It should inspire us to not let prejudice—be it gender, race, religion, age or sexual identity—undermine our passion or our drive to succeed.

Review: I found On The Cusp: The Women of Penn '64 to be a very compelling read. The 19 women from the class of 1964 tell their stories of how much they gained from attending the elite institution of Penn. As well as how they forged their paths at a time in history when women were not welcome in the areas of science, government, law, business, medicine and public service. They all had to overcome obstacles to achieve equality and professional accomplishments. These women all achieved success in there own right, many while also rising a family. All of these women have given great contributions to American society. Every woman should read this book, it makes you proud to see the advances that we woman have made. These articulate women evoke admiration in a powerful way, they just keep pushing forward and achieving. This book made me think about how much we take for granted today. With the opportunities that we have anything is possible.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading “On the Cusp – The Women of Penn ’64,” the story of 19 incredible women who had remarkable professional careers after graduating from the prestigious Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. During this era women with a college degree had few career choices: being a nurse or teacher, or if they could type and take shorthand, a secretary. These amazing women were discouraged from majoring in business, math, science, architecture and law but still enrolled in classes where all of the other students were men. They broke the mold to overcome scores of obstacles and layers of glass ceilings and went on to become leaders in business, science, medicine, law and other fields. You don’t have to be a Penn alum to enjoy this book.
